For the man (or woman) who has everything, these floating city-state might be an intriguing investment option.
Called a Seasteads, the moveable man-made islands will be able to house 225 individuals, plus 50 guests at the attached resort. The pilot project is aimed at individuals disgruntled with the current state of government, and those who would like to explore an ‘alternative social system’. The Seastead Institute, a non-profit organisation which is the pioneering force behind the idea, hopes to help establish a community of self- governing individuals, free from any government laws and taxes.
So what would residents of these seateads get in return for their investments?
The upside is that if a resident disagrees with his neighbours, he can unhitch his seastead and float away (with his super yacht at the helm of things, we’d imagine) to another community.
The downside is the project’s actual feasibility. Right now, the promoters are talking to ‘host’ countries who will allow them to create a base within their territorial limits, with ‘substantial political autonomy’ acquired at a cost.
We think the Seastead project, which was established by PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel among others, will find takers among A-List eco-warriors like Leonardo DiCaprio and the Jolie-Pitts.
